About Florida Cow Whips
Florida cow whips get their name from their origin herein the Sunshine state. After cattle were brought to Florida in 1500s by the Spanish, the cow whip we used to herd cattle and chase them out of the brush. This is where we get the term ‘Florida cracker’.
Florida has a long and rich history in ranching, especially with cattle. Cow whips were traditionally made from buckskin but have transitioned to synthetic materials since the production of nylon. These new materials offer resilience and can handle the rugged conditions of Florida’s cattle country. In addition, nylon is relatively cheap and can be replaced.
My Florida Cow Whips
I begin each cow whip with a weighted core, followed by a 10-plait belly, and a 12-plait overlay. The whip is then finished with a classic tapering twist and soaked in melted beeswax, adding weight and helping to repel dirt and water.
The cow whip is quite heavy when compared to stock and performance hybrid whips, but this added mass aids in producing a loud crack with less effort—especially useful for moving cattle on horseback.
Tornillo is the standard wood I use for handles, which can vary in shape and style from whip to whip. I may also use Hard Maple, Ash, Oak, or whatever other hardwoods I happen to have on hand. Tornillo is durable and affordable, but it is very light.
